Compatibility settings – or driving with the parking brake on(Part 1)
In code kitchens, I usually spend some time with the database settings, especially with the Compatibility settings. Often certain settings don’t follow best practices and during discussions with the application developer, I hear “oh, I never changed these” or “I’m not sure about the impact, so better not touch them”.
Since they could drastically impact the performance or behavior of your applications, we’ve begun a series of blog posts to discuss some of these “secret” settings.
Use methods and database fields in 4D View Pro
With 4D v17 R2, it’s now possible to call 4D project methods and fields from within your formulas. This not only extends the possibilities of your 4D View Pro documents, but as the conversion process is continuously improved, calls to 4D methods and fields in converted 4D View documents are also preserved.
4D View Pro: New options for an enhanced user interface
UI is all about personal preference, and 4D View Pro gives you two new options to enhance yours.
Two properties have been added to the Property List in the new Appearance section. They allow you to tailor your 4D View Pro documents with a new user interface. The first property, User Interface, allows you to switch between two different display modes: Toolbar and None. The second property, Show formula bar, is a checkbox to hide or show the formula bar.

Create a 4D View Pro document offscreen
Do you need to create a 4D View Pro document using code, without any user interface? It’s possible! Because 4D View Pro documents are objects, it’s very easy to create off-screen documents. You can create a new document in a variable of object type and manipulate it through its properties. When your document is ready, you can register it in your database, in a file, or display it directly in a 4D View Pro area.
Keep track of your formulas with this new command
Imagine you have a list of formulas containing table names and some fields … then days later you decide to rename your tables. Now your formulas are no longer valid, which is totally understandable!
Well, good news: the new Parse formula command allows your formulas to remain valid when renaming 4D language or structure elements.
Display a collection in a listbox
Recently, 4D introduced of a new type of variable: collections, as well as a large set of methods to manipulate them. With 4D v17, the possibilities of collections is becoming larger by being able to easily display the content of a collection. How? List boxes of collection type!
