Log your SMTP conversations
As promised in a previous post, each R-release includes more advances related to email functionality, unlocking its hidden power.
4D v17 R5 provides an interesting new feature for email logs. Sometimes during development everything works fine but when you deploy to the customer, there’s a problem delivering emails. Discovering where the failure occurs can be difficult, since the communication is encrypted and you often don’t have access to the SMTP server log files. The problem is very likely related to your SMTP server, but how can you be sure? Simply start the SMTP log in your application! This log contains a record of all the actions performed, including those stopping the connection. Even better, this log shows the communications with the SMTP server in plain, non-encrypted text, making it easier to analyze.
Name your ranges and formulas in 4D View Pro
4D v17 R4 is on the way with a cool new 4D View Pro feature: named ranges and formulas. If you need to use formulas with references to cell(s) or constant(s), this feature can be a great help!
With these new commands, your formulas are more readable and easily accessible with 4D View Pro’s automatic completion.
Easily synchronize your processes
Preemptive processes are very useful for performing extensive calculations in parallel, using all of the cores in your CPU, but sometimes you need to delegate tasks to a cooperative process (e.g., using a non-preemptive command). With the New signal command, you can pause a process and wait for the response from another process!
Get and Set cell content in 4D View Pro
The ability to interact with a document via programming is an important part of using 4D View Pro. Now you can fill your documents by programming. You can set data as labels, database fields, or formulas in your document. Of course, if you can set, you can get too! You can also retrieve cell formulas or values entered by your users.
Code a range in 4D View Pro
4D v17 R4 brings new features to 4D View Pro and one of them is the creation of ranges with code.
First, you need to define a range object to manipulate your cells by programming. You can do this in 4D View Pro with the following new commands: VP Cell, VP Cells, VP Column, VP Row, VP All and VP Combine ranges.
Begin / end SQL in preemptive mode
Preemptive processes allow your applications to take full advantage of multi-core computers, resulting in faster responses to simultaneous requests. Beginning with 4D v17 R4, Begin SQL, End SQL, and the associated SQL statements used with an internal database are now preemptive compliant.
A new way to send mails
We know the importance of sending emails and common a task it has become in today’s applications. For example, imagine you’re in a business and you want to send an attractive email based on HTML with a few images or even a video, and attach a file to it (e.g., a purchase order or an invoice). And you want to do all of this with just a few lines of code. Code that is easy to write and understand. Well starting with 4D v17 R4, the previous scenario is now possible. That’s why we’ve enlarged the feature set related to emails.
Preemptive processes on 4D remote
Do you need to run complex calculations or exports on the client side? Use preemptive processes and start these actions without slowing down users and their daily work!
Work with .xlsx documents using 4D View Pro
Do you need to open a Microsoft Excel document directly in your 4D View Pro area, or convert a 4D View Pro document to Microsoft Excel format to send it to a customer? It’s now possible! Thanks to this feature, your 4D business applications have taken a further step towards better compatibility with the MS Office environment.
Write your own methods for objects
A new command is at your disposal allowing you to use formulas in your code. You can now encapsulate them in objects and call them when needed. There’s no more need to write your code as text. Now you can just pass your formula in your command and that’s it! This is a great addition, since your code isn’t text, you can benefit from Syntax highlighting and all the other advanced functionalities of the code editor!
