Use methods and database fields in 4D View Pro
With 4D v17 R2, it’s now possible to call 4D project methods and fields from within your formulas. This not only extends the possibilities of your 4D View Pro documents, but as the conversion process is continuously improved, calls to 4D methods and fields in converted 4D View documents are also preserved.
4D View Pro: New options for an enhanced user interface
UI is all about personal preference, and 4D View Pro gives you two new options to enhance yours.
Two properties have been added to the Property List in the new Appearance section. They allow you to tailor your 4D View Pro documents with a new user interface. The first property, User Interface, allows you to switch between two different display modes: Toolbar and None. The second property, Show formula bar, is a checkbox to hide or show the formula bar.
Create a 4D View Pro document offscreen
Do you need to create a 4D View Pro document using code, without any user interface? It’s possible! Because 4D View Pro documents are objects, it’s very easy to create off-screen documents. You can create a new document in a variable of object type and manipulate it through its properties. When your document is ready, you can register it in your database, in a file, or display it directly in a 4D View Pro area.
Convert a 4D View document to 4D View Pro
We know how important your customer’s existing 4D View documents are, and being able to move them to 4D View Pro has been a priority for us. This is now possible with 4D v16 R6 (as a preview). Converting your 4D View documents to 4D View Pro is just a single line of code, thanks to the new command, VP Convert from 4D View.
Automatic row height in list boxes, a new 4D View Pro feature!
Starting with 4D v16, you can set a different row height for each row in your list box. So with a few lines of code, you have a list box with rows that conform to the content. With this 4D v16 feature, we gave full control to the developer to precisely define the height for every single row of the list box.
With 4D v16 R5, we’ve decided to go further, and provide you with a fully automatic mode. It’s now possible to display lists in a gorgeous interface without any programming. You only need to set a few properties in the list box, and 4D does the rest for you. It’s magical, fluid, and again … not a single line of code!
4D View Pro spreadsheet is here!
After the advanced list usage completely covered with 4D v16, 4D v16 R4 reaches a major step toward with 4D View Pro by providing our customers with the first step of our 4D View Pro spreadsheet solution, provided as a preview.
4D View Pro – Variable Row Height in Listbox
Displaying a list where the line height would exactly fit the content is a very common need. 4D View Pro is including a new feature so that you can now control the height of each row independently in a listbox to make it fit to its content. To know more about 4D View Pro, check out this blog post.
There are actually now two ways to define the row height in a listbox:
- using new dedicated commands
- using a new control array

This feature is a powerful enhancement for the listbox object, providing you with a mean to define very flexible UIs. An array of objects can now be associated with the column of a listbox so that each cell can have different types of widgets according to the type of data to be displayed.
From 4D View to 4D View Pro
We have identified a large set of usages of 4D View in customer applications. One of them is an enhanced user interface using advanced lists, such as a property window for instance. Others are using 4D View to have detailed control of list display, requiring a large set of fine details not available in list boxes.
We also saw usage of 4D View as a reporting engine as well as a spreadsheet. As a result, 4D View Pro could not be a single solution or tool to handle all this cases.
