Nowadays, mobile users expect apps to work even when they’re offline. Otherwise, a poor network connection can give a poor user experience. Offline mode is no longer just an extra feature you can choose to add to your app, it’s something many users expect, especially for delivery apps with GPS navigation, apps for urgent medical assistance, construction businesses, and banking apps.
As you may already know, since v17 R2, 4D for iOS already allows users of the application to view data offline. But something was missing.
What about offline tasks?

With this in mind, we always aim to minimize the impact on your businesses with timely announcements, and most importantly, an improved alternative to the deprecated or removed functionality to ensure a smooth transition.
Actions using parameters have been available since 4D v17 R5, and we’re constantly working to make your apps more and more interactive with enhanced mobile experiences. In 4D v18 R6, new parameter formats are available: Signature and Barcode!

Keyword searches within 4D Write Pro documents simply require adding a new indexing attribute within each document. This isn’t done by default because this type of search is not often necessary so it wouldn’t make sense to systematically increase the size of the documents. However, when it’s needed, this type of index is very easy to build.
4D v18 R4 and ORDA made it possible for you to create high-level class functions above the data model. This allows you to write business-oriented code to hide complexity, reduce errors, and speed up the development process.
With 4D v18 R5, we’re bringing even more features to help you optimize and organize your code. For example, you might need to run a function locally on the client to improve performance when working in client/server mode. It’s now possible! Or if you expose your database as a REST server, you might want some functions to be available on the server-side but hidden for your REST clients. This is also possible!

The introduction of ORDA in 4D v17 was a game-changer. Now with the introduction of classes in 4D v18 R3, we will witness a paradigm shift in 4D programming. We can now take advantage of object-oriented programming concepts such as polymorphism, composition, and inheritance to write our own class libraries. You asked for a way to import and export different document formats via the 4D Write Pro widget and once again, 4D listened!
In addition to the 4D commands that already allow you to import and export documents in different formats, such as export .docx format with 4D v17 R4 and PDF format with 4D v18 R4. Now, 4D Write Pro can import and export different document formats via the widget from the toolbar and sidebar.
ORDA was a revolution with 4D v17. It opened a whole new world of possibilities and took you to another programming dimension. A dimension where you can easily develop applications using an object-oriented approach.
We didn’t stop there! We continued to add enhancements to ORDA through a set of features in each subsequent feature release. Now with 4D v18 R4, we’re thrilled to be going another step further with the availability of ORDA data model classes. Classes dedicated to your data model.
This will greatly elevate your code. Your applications can now easily expose services, be more manageable and easier to maintain, and seamlessly integrate with other applications.

Projects were introduced in 4D v17 R5. An architecture representing a giant evolution for 4D applications, projects opened the 4D world to source control tools, collaborative programming, code sharing, modularity, and much more! To make things even better (and simpler), 4D v18 R4 creates new projects by default, while developers – if they choose to do so – can continue to create binary databases via a simple setting.
