The end of the static web?

John Allsop just published a very interesting Stats of the Web 2008 report. Over 1200 people responded, with the majority seeing themselves as developers rather than designers.

The most interesting stat was that over 96.5% were using a backend database to power their sites. Now admittedly these developers are probably more cutting edge than the majority of web site creators but it is an amazing statistic that so many are focused on dynamic web content. It would have been interesting to see what this number would have been even 2 to 3 years ago.

So with so much dynamic content being used when does a web site become a web application? Is there a percentage of content that must be dynamic or are there some other criteria for defining what a web site is versus a web application?
